Shopping While Black
What is shopping while black law?
"Shopping While Black" is a term that highlights the experience of Black individuals who are unfairly singled out by store employees, security personnel, or other shoppers while they are in retail establishments. The practice of “shopping while Black” is a form of racial profiling, where individuals are treated as suspects or criminals simply because of their appearance and race. It creates an uncomfortable and harmful environment, where Black consumers are unjustly targeted while engaging in ordinary activities.
There are many different types of "shopping while Black" discrimination, including, but not limited to:
- Being followed by store security or employees without cause;
- Being suspected of theft or shoplifting based solely on racial stereotypes or assumptions;
- Being harassed, questioned, or detained by store personnel without any legitimate reason; and
- Facing discriminatory treatment from store staff or other customers based on race.
